Generally, it’s believed that deaf people, due to their condition, are not interested in music.

It’s important to highlight that music, like any sound, is a vibration that gets transmitted by air. When it reaches our body, it can be perceived throughout the whole body as small vibrations, and in the case of people that can hear, interpreted by the eardrum and then the brain.

This means that the more low-pitched sounds a song has, the better it will it be perceived by deaf people.  Let’s remember that due to the vast amount of variations in hearing loss of the deaf population, many of its members can in fact hear music, even if it is but a small part of the whole spectrum.

Nowadays one of the deaf youth’s favorite hobbies (as is the case with hearing people) is to go clubbing. In the year 2012 a pilot project was launched in Madrid (Spain) called EQUAL Deafriendly Video Disco. This was a club where the music that sounded through the speakers had its counterpart in Sign language displayed on the screens.

The project lasted 6 months, and beyond the economical profit or lack of it, what was evident was that the deaf population doesn’t alienate itself from any form of entertainment, even though it seems very far away from their lives and interests.
