Myth II- All deaf people speak the same language.
Every country has its own sign language. They are differences even between regions within a country (the same way accents differ.) However, there is an International Sign System, even though it is simpler and not used as much.
This statement is much more widely spread than what people believe. We know that language and culture are intimately related, thatâs why it isnât logical to think that all deaf people in the world speak the same language. Not even within a country can a single language be spoken. This is the case of Spain, where two sign languages coexist: Spanish and Catalan. On the other hand it is true that there is an International Sign System, a compilation of chosen signs for the communication between countries: but itâs only used in international meetings. It is not the mother tongue of any group.
