Myth V- All deaf people know how to read lips.

“The development of lip-reading requires that apprentices follow all the cues related to the message, including the surroundings and the movements the speaker makes as he/she speaks.” (Shea and Bauer, 2000)

Not all deaf people acquire their deafness at the same age or in the same manner. Lip-reading is a long and costly process. Let’s remember that it isn’t totally effective, because words like “mama” and “papa” look exactly the same when spoken.
