In his remarks before Congress, McCoy stated, \u201cAsthma is a very common chronic respiratory disease in children, with the highest rates during the first four years of life. It is caused by complex interactions between genetic and environmental factors, such as infections, allergies, and air pollution.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dogs (but not cats) may protect against childhood asthma, according to a study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cChildren spend most of their time indoors, so in this research we wanted to study household allergens. These are an important risk factor that we could modify to reduce asthma.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The research included a group of 1,050 children who participated in the Canadian CHILD cohort study. Researchers analyzed dust samples from the children\u2019s homes, taken when they were between three and four months old. For each child, the amounts of three potential allergens present in the dust were measured: Can f1 (a protein found in dog skin and saliva), Fel d1 (a protein found in cat skin and saliva), and endotoxin (a molecule found on the surface of bacteria).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the children were five years old, a doctor assessed them for asthma and measured their lung function by the amount of air they could exhale in one second after a deep breath (forced expiratory volume in one second, or FEV1). The children also provided blood samples to assess their genetic risk factors for asthma and allergies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The researchers found that infants exposed to higher levels of the canine allergen Can f1 had approximately a 48% lower risk of developing asthma by age five, compared to other infants. The infants exposed to higher levels of the canine allergen also had better lung function. This protective effect was even greater in babies with a higher genetic risk of poor lung function.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
