Friends, we have overthrown a political dynasty,” Mamdani said in his first speech after his victory was announced, referring to former Governor Cuomo, whose father was also governor.

He continued to highlight the diverse voters who propelled him to victory, from “the Mexican grandmother” to “Yemeni bodega owners,” “Senegalese taxi drivers,” “Uzbek nurses,” and “Ethiopian aunts.”

“New York will continue to be a city of immigrants, a city built by immigrants, driven by immigrants. And starting tonight, led by an immigrant,” he emphasized, amidst cheers from his supporters at a campaign event in Brooklyn.

“This victory is yours. Democracy is yours too. And in this moment of political darkness, New York will be the light,” he promised.

He also took the opportunity to address President Donald Trump directly, who had urged New Yorkers not to vote for the Democrat, whom he calls a “communist,” or face the consequences. Trump threatened to cut federal funding to the city.

“Donald Trump, I know you’re watching. I only have four words for you: Turn up the volume!” the newly elected president exclaimed from the podium, making it clear he wouldn’t hesitate to fight.

“To get to any one of us, you’ll have to step over all of us,” he concluded.

Trump, for his part, has not directly addressed Mamdani’s victory. But half an hour after the Democrat declared himself the winner, in a message on Truth Social, he attributed the Republicans’ defeat in various elections on Tuesday to the government shutdown, which, at 35 days, has become the longest in the nation’s history.

Mamdani, who has been a member of the New York State Assembly since 2021, made affordable access the central focus of his campaign, promising to expand social programs funded by new taxes on high-income earners and large corporations.

His candidacy drew criticism from business leaders and centrist Democrats, some of whom did not support him, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.

Tuesday’s New York City mayoral election saw the highest turnout since 1969. According to preliminary official data, more than 2 million people voted, compared to just over 1 million in 2021.

In addition to New York City, millions of Americans went to the polls on Tuesday to elect governors and mayors or to pass local laws.

The first election day since Donald Trump’s victory in the presidential election last November is considered by many to be a kind of test of his administration’s policies.

So far, the results appear to favor the Democrats. Projections indicate that the Democratic candidates, Abigail Spanberger and Mikie Sherrill, won the gubernatorial elections in Virginia and New Jersey, respectively.

California also passed Proposition 50, a plan to redraw electoral districts that would counteract the new electoral map in Texas pushed by Trump ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

Mamdani’s Proposals

At 34, Mamdani will become New York City’s youngest mayor in a century and its first Muslim mayor.

With a left-leaning platform, the Democrat has promised reforms including a rent freeze for one million tenants, the creation of 200,000 affordable housing units, free universal childcare, free public buses, and city-owned grocery stores.

“This is a city where one in four people lives in poverty, a city where 500,000 children go to bed hungry every night,” he told the BBC during an event in June. “And ultimately, it’s a city that is in danger of losing what makes it so special.”

His proposals would be funded by higher taxes on corporations and high-income earners, though some critics have questioned whether the plan would work.

Furthermore, some, even within his own party, have wondered how a politician with no executive experience would be able to deal with a hostile Trump administration.

His victory also poses a dilemma for the political The Democratic Party establishment has been reluctant to endorse him, deeming him too “radical.”

His opponent, former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who ran for mayor as an independent after losing the primary to Mamdani in June, insisted that his rival lacks experience and is too radical for a city with a $115 billion budget and more than 300,000 municipal workers.

Born in Kampala, Uganda, Mamdani moved to New York with his family when he was 7 years old and became a U.S. citizen in 2018.

He studied at the Bronx High School of Science and later earned a degree in African Studies from Bowdoin College, where he co-founded the university chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine.

This progressive millennial has embraced his Ugandan and Indian roots in a diverse city.

He released a campaign video entirely in Urdu, interspersed with clips from Bollywood films. In another, he spoke in Spanish.

Mamdani and his wife, Rama Duwaji, a 27-year-old Syrian artist living in Brooklyn, met on the dating app Hinge.

“We know that presenting ourselves publicly as Muslims also means sacrificing the safety we can sometimes find in the shadows,” he said at a rally this spring.

His mother, Mira Nair, is a celebrated film director, and his father, Professor Mahmood Mamdani, teaches at Columbia University. Both are Harvard alumni and key figures in shaping Mamdani’s world of thought.

Before entering politics, the mayor-elect worked as a housing consultant, helping low-income homeowners in the New York City borough of Queens fight evictions.

Zohran Mamdani, the newly elected mayor of New York City, stands out in many ways. He will be the city’s youngest mayor since 1892, and the first Muslim and the first African-born person to hold the office.

That alone makes his victory over former Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa remarkable. But beyond that, he represents the kind of politician that many within his party who lean more to the left have been searching for for years.

He is young and charismatic, with the ease of using social media that characterizes his generation.

His ethnic background reflects the diversity of the Democratic Party’s base.

He has not shied away from political confrontations and has proudly championed left-wing causes, from free childcare and expanded public transportation to government intervention in the free market system.

He has demonstrated the ability to focus on the economic issues that are priorities for working-class voters who have recently drifted away from the Democratic Party, and he has done so without repudiating the cultural principles of the left.

By competing against Cuomo—a former governor of New York who is, in turn, the son of a governor—and defeating him, he has triumphed over the Democratic establishment, which many on the left accuse of being disconnected from the party and the nation.

Reactions

Trump has not directly addressed Mamdani’s victory, but half an hour after the Democrat declared himself the winner in New York, he attributed the Republicans’ defeat in some of Tuesday’s primaries to the government shutdown.

The shutdown has now lasted 35 days, the longest in the nation’s history, following the inability of Republicans and Democrats to agree on extending the budget.

“Trump’s absence from the ballot and the government shutdown were the two reasons why Republicans lost the election tonight, according to the polls,” the president wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social.

From the Republican ranks, the only one who directly addressed Mamdani’s victory was Speaker of the House Mike Johnson.

“Democrats in New York City have elected a true extremist and Marxist, and the consequences will be felt throughout our nation,” he wrote on his Twitter account. “The election of Zohran Mamdani solidifies the transformation of the Democratic Party into a radical, big-government socialist party,” he added.

Meanwhile, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, who did not endorse Zohran Mamdani until late in the race, called the results a verdict on the cost of living.

“Donald Trump and the Republicans haven’t made a damn effort to reduce the high cost of living. And working-class Americans know it,” he wrote on X.

Former President Barack Obama also took to the social media platform X to congratulate not only Mamdani, but “all the Democratic candidates who won tonight.”

“This is a reminder that when we unite around strong, forward-thinking leaders who care about the issues that matter, we can win,” he added.

“We still have a lot of work to do, but the future looks a little brighter.”

Senator Bernie Sanders, an independent from Vermont who grew up in Brooklyn, rejoiced at Mamdani’s victory in New York.

After starting at 1% in the polls, Mamdani “achieved one of the great political turnarounds in modern American history,” Sanders, who supported the democratic socialist in the June primaries, wrote in X.

“We CAN create a government that represents the working class, not the 1%.” “I look forward to working with Zohran as he builds a city that works for everyone,” he added.

Key Election Day

In addition to the New York City mayoral race, and dozens of state and local elections across the country, the United States experienced a crucial election day on Tuesday.

Two of the most closely watched races, besides the New York City mayoral race, were those for governor in Virginia and New Jersey.

In Virginia, Democrat Abigail Spanberger secured a clear victory and will become the state’s first female governor.

In New Jersey, preliminary results also show a comfortable win for Democratic candidate Mikie Sherrill.

In California, after voters approved Proposition 50, which redraws electoral districts, its sponsor, Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom, was quick to celebrate.

“We stood firm against Donald Trump’s recklessness… After provoking the bear, this…” “The bear roared,” Newsom said.

“What a night for the Democratic Party!” he exclaimed, adding that his party is now “not on the defensive, but on high alert.”

This is the first electoral test since Trump’s victory in the presidential election last November, and so far the results appear to favor the Democrats.

Zohran Mamdani, 34, will be the new mayor of New York City.
