EVERYONE’S A STAR! – 5 Seconds of Summer (EN)

5 Seconds of Summer (5SOS) formed in 2011 in Sydney, Australia. It all began when Luke Hemmings, Michael Clifford, and Calum Hood, classmates at Norwest Christian College, started uploading covers on YouTube. One of the first that drew significant attention was their version of “Next to You”, which led them to gain thousands of followers in a short time.

In December 2011, Ashton Irwin joined the group, completing the final lineup. That same year, they played their first concert in a small pub in Sydney, performing for barely twelve people. Despite the modest start, their views kept growing, and they soon signed a contract with Sony, taking the first professional step in their career.

The international breakthrough

5SOS’s international visibility skyrocketed when Louis Tomlinson, a member of One Direction, shared one of their songs on Twitter. Shortly after, Niall Horan also publicly showed support for them. This simple gesture had a decisive impact: Directioners began listening to their music, and the industry quickly turned its attention to the Australian band.

Thanks to this connection, 5SOS was invited to open One Direction’s Take Me Home Tour in 2013. For a band that had been playing small pubs, moving to global stadium stages was a complete 180-degree shift. This tour became the starting point for their international explosion.

Early success and debut album

In 2014, they released their first international single, She Looks So Perfect, which debuted at number one in the UK and reached high positions in several other countries. That same year, they released their self-titled album 5 Seconds of Summer, which hit number one in more than ten countries, including Australia and the United States.

This debut established 5SOS as one of the most successful youth bands of the decade, standing out for their blend of pop-punk elements with energetic guitars and lyrics aimed at a young audience.

Musical evolution and artistic growth

Their second album, Sounds Good Feels Good (2015), showed a more mature stage with stronger pop-punk and alternative rock influences. Later, with Youngblood (2018), the band made a significant shift toward a more polished and experimental sound. The single Youngblood became one of their biggest global hits.

They later released CALM (2020) and 5SOS5 (2022), the latter featuring songs such as Complete Mess,“Blender”and “Me Myself & I”, which reflect a more refined and emotional sonic identity. Critics praised the album’s maturity and the consolidation of the band’s distinctive sound.

In 2025, the band announced their sixth studio album, Everyone’s A Star!, marking a new creative phase. This era represents a mix of styles and an even deeper artistic exploration, reaffirming that 5SOS is no longer just a youth band but a group in full professional evolution.

Band or boy band?

For years, there was debate over whether 5SOS were a “boy band”, especially due to their connection with One Direction. The band always emphasized that they played instruments and wrote their own music—traits more associated with pop-rock. However, over time they also embraced the boy-band label, recognizing that their youthful image and impact on audiences fit that category, without diminishing their authenticity or artistic value.

Their legacy

5 Seconds of Summer has solidified itself as one of the most influential Australian bands of its generation, evolving from YouTube to global pop-rock. Their trajectory aligns with an era in which groups like BTS demonstrated the power of international fandoms and the globalization of pop, placing 5SOS within a generation of artists with global reach. Today, 5SOS is a clear example of how a band can transform, remain authentic, and continue to be meaningful in contemporary music.
