One Direction was a popular British boy band formed in 2010. Especially in an era when boy bands were all the rage. It was a new genre, a successor to indie rock groups like Cage the elephant-en. They were formed on the television program “The X Factor,” where contestants competed against each other to launch their musical careers. This is where the future members of the band participated: Louis Tomlinson (18 years old), Zayn Malik (17 years old), Niall Horan (16 years old), Liam Payne (16 years old), and Harry Styles (16 years old). They formed on July 23, 2010. Although they all initially competed as solo artists, they were brought together to advance to the finals. From that moment on, despite still being just contestants, they amassed a considerable number of fans in the United Kingdom. “The X Factor” was very popular there at the time, thanks to their musical performances and the diverse personalities they showcased in a series called “Video Diaries.” Not to mention, the strong friendship they forged among the five members in such a short time captivated the public.

They didn’t win The X Factor; they came in third place. But the show’s producer, Simon Cowell, seeing the band’s potential, decided to invest in them, becoming their manager and officially forming One Direction. From there, they amassed a huge following, especially due to their interviews. It wasn’t until 2011 that they released their first album, which became the most-streamed album that year in the UK and 72 other countries. One Direction’s popularity continued to grow over the next few years, releasing five albums in four years and embarking on three world tours. They even invited 5SOS to join them on one of their tours. Another popular band that recently released Everyone’s A Star! this year. However, due to their immense popularity, they were subjected to enormous stress from production and global fame, barely seeing their families and relying almost exclusively on each other.

However, everything changed on March 25, 2015, during their last world tour, when Zayn Malik (22 years old) left the band to pursue a solo career. From there, the band released their last album, “Made in the AM,” while continuing their world tour. However, in August of that year, they announced that the band would be taking an 18-month hiatus to focus on their solo careers. Their last music video, released in January 2016, was titled “HIstory,” a compilation of memories they shared during those years.

Despite calling it a break that would only last 18 months, 10 years have passed since that announcement, and most of the members have focused on their highly successful solo careers, suggesting that the hiatus marked the end of the One Direction era. Although the possibility of a reunion someday remained alive among the members and many fans, especially those who, despite the years, still hoped for One Direction’s return. All of that came crashing down when on October 16, 2024, one of its members, Liam Payne, died after falling from the 3rd floor of a hotel in Argentina, marking the definitive end of the band’s comeback.
