The Impact of Language and Terminology on Migration Perception

Language is a powerful tool for understanding and communicating social issues. In the context of migration, linguistic differences deeply influence how cultures perceive topics such as border crossing and human mobility. The terminology used to describe migrants can shape public perception, trigger emotional responses, and reinforce specific ideologies. For example, media outlets employ terms like “undocumented migrants” or “illegal immigrants,” which provoke different reactions among audiences—from empathy to rejection. This linguistic choice directly affects migration policies and how societies respond to migratory flows.

Moreover, the contrast between “expat” and “migrant” reveals a linguistic double standard with xenophobic implications. While “expat” is often associated with privilege and exclusivity, “migrant” is linked to collectivity and frequently carries negative connotations. In the same way that many films and series can take real cases and affect the lives of thousands of families through their inappropriate use, the use of articles such as “the migrants” can convey a derogatory tone, reinforcing social hierarchies and processes of dehumanization.

The media plays a crucial role in this phenomenon, as they reflect and amplify social realities through language. Social realities such as insecurity in a country are one of the most common reasons why families choose to migrate. The way migrant groups are labeled responds not only to cultural factors but also to ideological and political interests.

Finally, from a morphological perspective, the term “expat” in English emphasizes origin, while “immigrant” highlights the journey and arrival, carrying complex social meanings. This linguistic difference demonstrates how language not only describes reality but also constructs it.
