Insecurity in Ecuador has reached alarming levels in recent years, becoming one of the main concerns for citizens. Since 2020, violence rates have risen rapidly, but in 2023, the most severe consequences became evident. Assaults, extortion, kidnappings, and murders have become part of daily life, while the Ecuadorian government seems unable to provide effective responses.

Recent data shows that organized crime has caused a 66.4% increase in insecurity rates, reflecting a clear government crisis. Authorities have demonstrated a worrying lack of action, and citizens feel increasingly vulnerable to urban violence. News reports constantly show victims suffering at the hands of criminals while the State remains inactive.
Public Outrage and Failed Government Measures
Public indignation has grown, especially after the controversial decision to authorize gun carrying. This measure, far from providing security, has generated fear and uncertainty. Ecuador is not prepared for widespread gun legalization, and many fear this will only legitimize criminals’ power.
Citizen marches have become a form of peaceful protest. Recently, thousands of people took to the streets with signs reading: “They are killing us, Mr. President”, demanding peace and respect for their rights. Insecurity has reached the point where many citizens fear leaving their homes, and some have even chosen to migrate to other countries seeking a safer life.
Temporary Solutions That Fail to Solve the Problem
The government has resorted to measures such as states of emergency and curfews, but these solutions are temporary and ineffective. Once they end, violence returns even stronger. The lack of a comprehensive strategy has allowed crime to spread, directly affecting the population.
Additionally, the creation of groups like “The Vigilantes”, citizens who confront criminals on their own, reflects social desperation. Although these actions stem from frustration, they do not represent a sustainable or safe solution.
What Does Ecuador Need to Regain Security?
The government must urgently implement deep and lasting legal reforms. Some proposals include:
- Strengthening police presence on the streets.
- Training neighborhood security committees.
- Improving military and police training.
- Activating and promoting the use of panic buttons and community alarms.
- Applying harsher penalties against organized crime.
It is also essential to rethink the prison system. Prisons should function as social rehabilitation centers, focused on reintegration of offenders. However, current management fails to meet this goal, perpetuating the cycle of violence.
A Call to Action
Ecuador needs a security system overhaul. Authorities must stop being permissive and act decisively. The law must be enforced without exceptions, and criminals must face real consequences. Only then can we build a country free from fear and violence.
Insecurity is not an isolated gang problem; it is a direct threat to society. It is time to demand real, lasting, and humane solutions—because everyone deserves to live in peace.
